Many people spend their lives caring for the world around them and feeling connected to nature. For some individuals and families, that commitment extends even into the way they plan their final arrangements. One option that has gained growing interest in recent years is green burial, also known as natural burial.
Green burial offers a simple, environmentally conscious alternative to traditional burial practices while still allowing families to create meaningful services that honor their loved one.
What Is Green Burial?
Per Minnesota law, green burial is defined a “method of burial that emphasizes environmental sustainability without interfering with natural decomposition.” The goal is to minimize environmental impact while returning the body to the earth in the most natural way possible. This means, unlike traditional burials, things like embalming chemicals, metal or hardwood caskets and concrete burial vaults are avoided. Instead, the body is placed in a biodegradable container such as a simple wood casket, wicker casket or burial shroud.
Is Green Burial Legal in Minnesota?
Yes. However, it is up to each cemetery to decide whether they permit them and what the options look like. Many cemeteries require a concrete burial vault due to the upkeep of the ground over time. Without a burial vault, the ground may not be supported, and the body is less protected. Some cemeteries designate a portion to be used only for natural burials. It is important to research ahead of time to determine if the cemetery you choose allows for green funeral options.
One other thing to keep in mind is that the law requires burial to take place within 72 hours unless the decedent has been embalmed. This could be a factor in determining the timeline of funeral services.
Why Families Are Choosing Eco-Friendly Burial
Interest in green funeral options continues to grow as more families are looking for ways to reduce their environmental footprint. Common reasons include:
- Environmental stewardship – a green burial minimizes chemicals and materials that can impact the earth
- Simplicity – many people appreciate the simplicity and natural approach of a sustainable funeral
- Personal values – for those who value sustainability, an earth-friendly burial aligns with their beliefs
As more people explore sustainable funeral practices, green burials are becoming an important option to consider in funeral planning. It is important to note that just because someone chooses green burial does not mean you are giving up meaningful traditions or ceremonies. Families can still gather for a service, share memories and celebrate the life of their loved one.
