Vernon Rigge, age 96, of Granite Falls, Minnesota passed away Sunday, August 11, 2024 at the Clarkfield Care Center. Funeral Services will be held Thursday, August 15, 2024 at 11:00 AM at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Granite Falls. Burial will follow in St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be held Wednesday, August 14, 2024 from 5:00 - 7:00 PM with a Prayer Service at 6:30 PM at the Wing-Bain Funeral Home in Granite Falls. Visitation will continue Thursday from 10:00 - 11:00 AM, one hour prior to the service at the church.
Vernon Arnold Rigge was born March 4, 1928 to Reuban and Lena (Jeseritz) Rigge in Cottonwood, Minneosta. He was baptized on April 1st, 1928 at St. Luke Church in Posen Township and was confirmed on May 21st, 1944 at English Lutheran Church in Cottonwood. After graduating from high school in 1946, Vernon attended Morris Agriculture College where he was an All State football athlete. He was well known for his football career and was talked about for many years. Vernon served in the United States Army and was stationed in Alaska during the Korean War.
Vernon married the love of his life, Anita Timm, on May 20th, 1951 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Wood Lake. The couple lived on their farm near Granite falls and spent over 70 wonderful years together. They were blessed with four children, James, Janine, Susan and Kathleen.
Vernon a trustee in St. Paul Lutheran Church for many years, served on the church council, and sang in the choir. He enjoyed hunting and fishing in his younger days, and liked to spend time playing cards and shaking dice with his family and friends. Vernon lived to watch the Vikings and Twins, but his grandchildren were his true pride and joy.
Vernon was kind, caring and had a great sense of humor. Like the proud farmer he was, he took great care of his crops. After retiring from the fields, Vernon tended to the flowers he and Anita grew in their yard. Being a farmer through and through, Vernon had to make sure this year’s corn was growing well up until the day he passed.
Vernon is survived by his wife, Anita; children, James & Cindy Rigge, Janine & Jim Banken, Susan & Robin Kohn, Kathleen & John Korthius; grandchildren, Jesse & April Rigge, Kris & Holly Cobb, Amy & Tony Redepenning, Michael Rigge, Jason Bowers & special friend Jamie, Jeremy & Melissa Jerve, Steve & Katie Fry, Trent & Kristine Johnson, Mike & Laura Betker, Dilque & April Zea, Alisha & Brad Handeland, Angie & Dave Knollenberg; 30 great-grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; as well as other relatives and friends.
Vernon is preceded in death by his parents, Reuban & Lena Rigge; siblings, Lillian Peterson, Harvey Rigge, Baby Girl Rigge, Orvin Rigge, Donald Rigge, Lorraine Rosa; and great-grandchild, Baby Bruce.
