Sharon Maxine Schuler was born July 8, 1938, to John and Laura (Erickson) Heideman in Montevideo, MN. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. Sharon grew up in Montevideo and graduated from Montevideo High School with the class of 1956. She absolutely loved high school and was actively involved in many activities including cheerleading, girl’s athletic association, glee club, class officer positions, choir, and held the leading role in the school play in both her junior and senior years. The story of the highlight of cheerleading for their state entrant basketball team her senior year was often shared with her grandchildren.
On April 19, 1958, Sharon married the love of her life, Howard Schuler, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Montevideo. The couple made their home on a farm north of Granite Falls, and she was introduced to life on the farm. She helped bale hay, hauled silage wagons, picked and sold eggs, butchered chickens, and daily milked a Guernsey cow while keeping her family well-fed and cared for. While on the farm, the couple was blessed with three children: Chad, Robin, and Randy.
After Howard’s disabling farm accident, they moved into Granite Falls in 1964. Her role on the farm changed and she began working as a bank teller for the Yellow Medicine Bank. After a few years, she left the bank and assumed duties as the deputy county treasurer for Yellow Medicine County. When the position opened, she then campaigned for and was elected the Yellow Medicine County Treasurer. Sharon was known by her coworkers to be hardworking and meticulous in her work while showing kindness and patience to anyone that encountered her. This was a position she held for 18 years, retiring in 2000.
Active in her community, as well, Sharon was a member of the Lady Slippers Flower Club and the American Legion Auxiliary. She also, was involved in her church as a Sunday School teacher for many years and was involved in the LWML.
Sharon deeply loved her family, and she cherished any precious time spent with them whether it was at a family gathering or just a simple one-on-one conversation about the Timberwolves. Over the years, she enjoyed watching her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren participate, as she did, in school activities. Though she was known for her fear of the water, numerous family memories were made at their lake cabin on Lake Minnewaska. Family members will long remember her as sincerely moral, compassionate, and humbly kind.
Sharon is survived by her children, Chad Schuler, Robin (Phil) Smith, Randy (Lori) Schuler; step-daughter, Rhonda Ward; grandchildren, Heather (Brad) Bigler, Sarah (Taylor) Huseby, Heidi (Justin) Harer, Sally (Ryan) Gniffke, Aaron Schuler, Amber (Kelsey) Schuler, Chayse Schuler, Coltyn Schuler, Ty (significant other, Kaylee Kleene) Schuler; great grandchildren, Taleigha, Nash, Tatum, Xavier, Mateo, Sutton, Landon, Marshall, Sawyer, Axton, Ryker, Baynx, Raddix, Ayson; siblings, Pam (Sean) Kidrick, James Heideman; sister-in-law, Mary Lou Smith; as well as other relatives and friends.
