Phyllis Audrey Ostensoe was born on July 3, 1917, in White Bear Lake, MN, the daughter of Carl and Emily (Westburg) Mattlin. She was baptized and confirmed in the Christian faith at St. John's in the Wilderness Evangelical Church in White Bear Lake. She completed elementary school and high school in White Bear Lake. Following her high school graduation, Phyllis attended the University of Minnesota, obtaining degrees in Library Science and French. She then worked for a time at a hospital in Green Bay, WI as their chief librarian. Following the end of WWII, Phyllis was united in marriage to Frederick Ostensoe in March of 1946, at St. John's in the Wilderness Episcopalian Church in White Bear Lake.They resided for years in Canby, where Frederick practiced law. In 1960, they moved to Granite Falls. Frederick went on to become a county judge and Phyllis applied her skills as City Librarian in the Granite Falls City Library. She was actually responsible for cataloging the entire library inventory. They moved back to White Bear Lake for a time and Frederick passed away in 1995. Phyllis then returned to Granite Falls. Phyllis enjoyed reading, playing the piano, traveling and going on vacations. She was a loving wife, mother and friend to many. She passed away in the morning hours of Tuesday, June 4, 2013, while a resident of the Granite Falls Manor. Phyllis was 95 years of age. Surviving Phyllis are her two sons- Ken Ostenso of Minneapolis and Jerry Ostensoe of Granite Falls.Surviving Phyllis are her two sons- Ken Ostenso of Minneapolis and Jerry Ostensoe of Granite Falls. She was preceded in death by her parents Carl & Emily Mattlin, her husband Frederick, and brothers Carol Mattlin & Harold Mattlin.
