Mildred E. Slater was born December 1, 1928, the daughter of Edwin & Mamie (Christopherson) Mahlum, in Sacred Heart, MN. She was baptized and confirmed at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Sacred Heart and remained a member there until her death. She graduated from the Sacred Heart High School in 1946.

Millie met her future husband while working on the Slater family farm. She was united in marriage to Harold Slater in Sacred Heart on July 6, 1946. They farmed north of Sacred Heart where Millie enjoyed helping her husband until they moved to town in 1988. She also worked a number of years at the Warner Manufacturing Plant until her retirement.

Millie was a devoted wife and mother. Her family meant everything to her, taking great pride in her three grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Millie’s grandchildren have fond memories of her “spunky” personality as a grandma as she was always ready to have fun. She enjoyed singing her favorite nursery rhymes to them and teaching them her favorite Norwegian Prayer. Millie had a quick wit and a playful sense of humor.
She loved to play cards, and was especially known for her love of Bridge and Whist. In fact she loved playing cards so much that during the last 10 years of her life, living at her apartment complex, she would walk the halls in the evening looking for someone to play cards with her. Millie was best known for her baked chicken and no matter who showed up at the farm around dinner time, she always made sure they were fed. She had a servant’s heart, always thinking of others first and willing to help someone in need.
Millie passed away on December 22, 2019, at the Granite Falls Health Care Center, where she had lived for the last year. She was 91 years of age.
She is survived by her son Galen (Beth) Slater of Montevideo; her grandchildren: Dr. Jared (Julie) Slater and their children Maddie, Jack & Sophie of Victoria, MN; Jill (Kyle) Bauer and their soon-to-be-born baby girl of Merrifield, MN; and Jennie Slater of Montevideo; sister-in-law Genevieve Zuidema of Willmar, MN; and brother-in-law Dale Slater of Granite Falls, MN; as well as several nieces, nephews and extended family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Harold in 1995, an infant sister and one brother, Robert Mahlum.
Funeral service will be held on Saturday, December 28th at 11am at Cornerstone Baptist Church in Montevideo. Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday.
