Maxine Slettum, 83, of Montevideo, passed away on Saturday, July 13th at Luther Haven Nursing Home. Funeral services will be held on Monday, July 22nd at 11 am at Our Savior's Lutheran Church. Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the church on Monday.
Maxine Carol Anderson Slettum was born in Montevideo, Minnesota, on May 24, 1941, and died at Luther Haven Nursing Home on July 13, 2024, setting to peaceful rest after a lifetime of health challenges. A 1959 graduate of Montevideo High School, she attended Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota, before returning to town to work at the NW Bell Telephone Company, Chippewa Courthouse Extension Office, and Avon Cosmetics.
Maxine was baptized and confirmed at Our Savior's Lutheran Church and met the love of her life, Marlyn, while singing in the church choir. Married on June 26, 1965, they were inseparable for 48 years in their daily lives, and enjoyed together nature and gardening, music including the piano, antiquing and decorating, volunteering at the Chippewa County Historical Society and enjoying drives in their vintage cars with the Scenic Valley Cruisers Car Club.
Leaving the workplace to raise two children, Maxine devoted her energies to homemaking, cooking, baking, hosting holidays, sewing and needlework, school volunteering, and chauffeuring. Time outside the house was often spent at church: Ladies' and Senior Choir for 40 years, church boards, teaching Sunday School, Julia Circle and WELCA activities, bible studies, helping to arrange dinners, decorating bake sales and Christmas trees. She sang solos for weddings and funerals, and when family or friends asked for assistance with reunions, graduations, or showers, she was always available. She loved her two grandchildren, books, teddy bears, birds and teacups.
Maxine is survived by her children Ann Slettum, St. Paul, MN, and Mark and Stacy (Wahl) Slettum, Slayton, MN; grandchildren Noah (fiancee Courtney Horner) Slettum and Kate Slettum, Slayton, MN; brother Merriam (Andy) Anderson, Montevideo, MN; sister-in-law Shirley Larson, St. Paul, MN, and many cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents Milton and Solveig (Lyngen) Anderson and in-laws Melvin and Sigrid (Dinusson) Slettum, sister Ethelyn (Ethy) Anderson and brother-in-law Vincent Larson.
Strong in her faith, blessed be Maxine's memory. Memorials preferred to Our Savior's Lutheran Church or Luther Haven.
