Joan Johnson, 68, of Granite Falls, passed away on Friday, December 17th at her home. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, December 22nd at 11:00 am at Rock Valle Lutheran Church. Visitation will be held on Tuesday evening from 5 to 7 pm at the Wing-Bain Funeral Home and continue one hour prior to services at the church on Wednesday.

Joan Renay (Sandberg) Johnson was born on February 28, 1953, to Clarence & Sylvia (Lund) Sandberg. She was baptized at Saron Lutheran Church. Joan attended school in Granite Falls and graduated from the Granite Falls High School in May of 1971, with honors.

August 1, 1971, Joan was united in marriage with the love of her life DuWayne Curtis Johnson at Granite Falls Lutheran Church. Joan attended the Granite Falls Vo-Tech graduating in May of 1972. Joan worked at Aldred’s Department Store until her Vo-Tech graduation. She then started at the Yellow Medicine County Bank. She later took a job with Yellow Medicine County and worked there until her retirement in 2013.

Two beautiful children were raised by Joan and DuWayne; Matthew was adopted and brought to Granite Falls on December 20, 1983, and in August of 1985 a daughter was born: Sylena (Ben) Swanson and their son Henry of Champlin.

Joan loved her family more than anything else in her life. She was an organist at Rock Valle Lutheran Church of Echo for 47 years. She loved helping people, which she did mostly by volunteering at Neighbors Untied Food Shelf. She helped so many people in her life. Joan and her family loved spending time together at Lake Carlos. She loved to sew, crafts, scrapbooking and bowling in her younger days.

Joan is survived by her husband DuWayne, children: Matthew, Sylena (Ben) and her grandson Henry; aunts Eunice Skeie of Granite Falls and Mavis Weingartner of Bloomington; step sister Susan (Bruce) Haugland of LeSueur, brother-in-law Dale Johnson, sisters-in-law Debra Johnson-Abernathy and Ann Johnson and several nieces, nephews and extended family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents Clarence & Sylvia, in-laws Curtis & Ilean Johnson, step father Marvin Skrukrud, and brothers-in-law David Johnson and Bruce Abernathy.
