Evelyn Behrens Ross, 96, of Montevideo, MN, passed away peacefully on July 28, 2026.

Evelyn was born on October 8, 1929, in Appleton, MN, to Ernest and Bertha (Stock) Behrens. She graduated from Appleton High School and was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Appleton. Her faith remained a guiding force throughout her life, and she was a devoted member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Montevideo.

On September 16, 1950, Evelyn married the love of her life, Jerome “Jerry” Ross. Together they shared 60 wonderful years of marriage, built on faith, laughter, perseverance, and unwavering devotion. They raised seven children and created a legacy that now spans generations.

Years later, while dancing together at their oldest grandson’s wedding, Jerry looked at his bride with the same admiration he had as a young man. Anyone who watched them dance could see a lifetime of love in every step—two steps forward, two steps back, a twirl, and Jerry’s gentle hand on Evelyn’s cheek. They moved together with the ease and grace that only comes from spending a lifetime in each other’s arms.

Evelyn began her career as a telephone operator with Northwestern Bell. While she enjoyed her years of work, the roles she cherished most were those of wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and homemaker. She devoted herself wholeheartedly to her family, creating a home filled with love, kindness, faith, and unwavering support.

A gifted quilter, Evelyn stitched her love into every quilt she made. Each one was thoughtfully designed with its recipient in mind, wrapping children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren not only in warmth but in a lasting reminder of her generosity and care. Her beautiful handiwork will continue to comfort her family for generations to come.

Evelyn is survived by her children: Theresa Mitlyng (David) of Montevideo, MN; Michael Ross (Anita) of Lake Nebagamon, WI; Carol Mitzelfeldt (David) of Onalaska, WI; Connie Pauling (Bill) of Montevideo, MN; Jacque Durhman (Eric) of Fountain Hills, AZ; Kathy Ross of Two Harbors, MN; and Jennifer Lundell (Troy) of Sartell, MN. She is also survived by 21 beloved grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, along with many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Jerome Ross; her parents, Ernest and Bertha Behrens; her brothers, Harold and Harlen Behrens; and her grandson, Gabriel Ross.

A visitation will be held on Friday, July 31, 2026, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Wing-Bain Funeral Home in Montevideo. Funeral service will be held on Saturday, August 1, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 321 N. Fifth Street, Montevideo, with a reception to follow.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, a hospice organization, or a charity of the donor’s choice.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Montevideo Hospital and Luther Haven Nursing Home for the compassionate care and kindness shown to Evelyn during her final days.

Though her hands are now at rest, the love she poured into her family remains stitched into every memory, every quilt, and every life she touched. Her greatest legacy was not simply the years she lived, but the family she nurtured and the enduring love story she shared with Jerry—a story that continues to inspire all who knew them.
