Edward Athey, 68, of Montevideo, passed away on Sunday, June 7, 2026, at his residence. Funeral service will be held on Saturday, June 13th at 11:00 am at St. Paul Lutheran Church. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 pm on Friday at the Wing-Bain Funeral Home and will continue for one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday.
Edward Dean Athey was born August 25, 1957, the son of Francis and Myrna (Anderson) Athey in Graceville. He was baptized at home. Ed attended school in Big Stone, South Dakota and Clinton.
Ed served his country in the United States Army and spent time in Germany and Vietnam. He was honorably discharged in September of 1978 and went on to serve another four years in the Minnesota National Guard in Ortonville.
Ed was united in marriage with Christina DiNatle on July 7, 1979, at Holden Lutheran Church in Beardsley. He worked for Chandler Industries for many years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, woodworking, cooking and baking. He also enjoyed gardening, canning, demo cars, going to auctions, visiting with his sister Donna, Wilber & Wayne “Frog”, playing cards, spending time with grandkids and being a prankster. His favorite quote was “Don’t worry about it” and he liked to watch the Minnesota Vikings. Ed was always willing to give a helping hand to anyone. Even when he had physical limitations, the last couple of years, he was more than happy to share his knowledge and experience and help any way he could. He was very proud to serve his country.
He is survived by his wife Tina; daughter Jennifer Athey (Justin O’Malley); grandchildren: Gavin Brouwer, Desiree Athey, Dominick Athey and Sylas O’Malley; his mother Myrna; siblings: Donna Arndt, Diane Bengston, Charlie Athey, and Robert Terwedo and extended family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his father Francis, sons Randal and Jacob and two siblings: Larry Athey and Sheryl Newbower.
