David Hagen,73, of Greensboro, Georgia, formerly of Granite Falls, passed away on Saturday May 6, 2023, at his residence. Memorial services will be held on Friday, May 26th at 2:00 pm at Granite Falls Lutheran Church. Visitation will be held Thursday evening, May 25th from 5 to 7 pm at the Wing-Bain Funeral Home in Granite Falls and will continue one hour prior to services on Friday.

David Gerhard Hagen was born July 26, 1949, the son of Edwin & Ruth Hagen, in Granite Falls,
Minnesota. He was baptized at home by his uncle Reverend Gerhard Mathre and confirmed at Granite Falls Lutheran Church. Dave graduated from Granite Falls High School in 1967.

Dave was united in marriage to Barbara Holien on March 8, 1969. He served his country in the United States Marine Corp and was honorably discharged in 1971. After his time in the service, Dave worked in the masonry construction field for several years and then spent 25 years as letter carrier with the United States Postal Service. After the postal service, and something to do in retirement, he built a self storage business. He said it was his favorite thing he did for work.

Dave will be remembered as a kind, friendly and good natured guy that always seemed to have time for a visit. He loved visiting with people. Whether it be a lifelong friend, family member or random stranger who he just met on the street, he simply liked the human connection.

He was funny. He had a good sense of humor and always liked a good joke. He enjoyed telling stories. Lately, most of which were funny things his grandkids used to say or do when they were little. He got such a kick out of it, he would laugh each and every time he told a memory, even if it was the thousandth time he told it.

He enjoyed the simple things in life. He loved family. His grandkids always made him smile. He loved good food, especially the spicy kind. He enjoyed camping and campfires. He loved making people laugh with silly and sometimes inappropriate jokes. He enjoyed a cold beer on a warm sunny day. He liked learning about the history of Granite Falls and his Norwegian heritage. He couldn’t stop himself from checking on the weather multiple times a day. Looking back, he was most happy and fulfilled when he was around people. This personal connection with others seemed to guide his direction in life.

As a mail carrier he had an opportunity to visit with literally 100’s of people each day. As an active member of the American Legion and member of the Honor Guard, he enjoyed being with other veterans who had similar backgrounds and experiences. As a volunteer at the church, he would do anything that was needed, but always preferred opportunities to work with other people. He was a true “people person.”

Of all the ways he gave back to his community, his time as a Hospice volunteer was the most rewarding for him. His personality traits and abilities aligned perfectly with this work. He was a kind, compassionate, non-judgmental person of faith with a true gift of small talk. A perfect fit for the job at hand.

Over the last couple of years his friendly and kind spirit was put to the test as the symptoms of ALS progressed and relentlessly destroyed his body. Dave showed great courage and strength under the most difficult of circumstances. He handled it with peace and grace. He was able to do this because of his strong faith, the love and dedication of his wife Barb, as well as the love and support he received from numerous family members and lots of friends.

Dave passed away on Saturday, May 6, 2023, peacefully, at his home in Greensboro, GA at the age of 73.

He is survived by his wife Barb; children: Eric (Christie) Hagen of Greensboro, GA and Jeremy (Brandi) Hagen of Golden Valley, MN; grandchildren: Braelin Hagen, Beck Hagen and Evan Hagen; siblings: Maxine Mills, Dianne (James) Barber, Barbara (Alden) Lund and Pauline (Roger) Nelson; sisters-in-law: Dianne Hagen, Margaret Holien & Beverly (Lyle) Gaines and several nieces nephews and extended family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, in-laws Bert and Delores Holien, brother Donald Hagen and brother in-law Lynn Mills.
