Dana Lewison

Dana John Lewison (Danny) was born on May 26, 1954 in Granite Falls Minnesota, the son of Howard and Judith (Knutson) Lewison. As a toddler Dana became afflicted with relentless seizures that stole his voice and abilities. Dana’s parents sought treatment all over the Midwest to help Dana to no avail. When Dana was 6 years old, they made the hard decision to send him to live and receive care and treatment at the Cambridge State Hospital and later the Willmar State Hospital. In 1993, Dana was able to move closer to home as he began living in a REM Canby group home where he happily lived for nearly 30 years. While there he was able to attend the Canby DAC where he made many lifelong friends. Dana loved music and although he was unable to speak much, he had an amazing ability to recall song lyrics and melodies which he would gladly sing upon request. He enjoyed watching all kinds of television shows, especially game shows, Sunday morning church services, The Golden Girls, musicals of all kinds (especially Grease) and singing along to a childhood favorite, Alvin and the Chipmunks. Dana also loved car rides, home visits and outings with family, frequent outings with his caregivers and treats from the Dairy Queen! Dana was a people person, always ready with a greeting and handshake and remembered the names of family, friends and caregivers even after they retired. Recently Dana was even able (with assistance) to enjoy FaceTime to communicate with family and even join family in singing a few Christmas Carols! Dana passed away peacefully on January 2, 2023, at the age of 68. He is survived by brother, Gerald “Jerry” Lewison of Granite Falls, MN, sisters, Sally (Bob) Engebretson of Leland, NC, and Linda (Steven) Finnes of Lakeville, MN. Sisters-in-law, Betty Lewison and Joyce Lewison. Dana was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Howard “Howie” Lewison, sister, Lola Klein and brother-in-law, Bruce Klein. We are joyful knowing that Dana is now reunited with his devoted parents in heaven.
