Hazel Quenemoen, 100, of Montevideo passed away Saturday January 29th at Luther Haven Nursing Home. A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, July 2nd at 11:00 am at Our Saviors Lutheran Church of Baxter. Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday. Hazel Benita (Quammen) Quenemoen was born on November 16, 1921, in Ten Mile Lake Township of Lac qui Parle County, Minnesota to Theodore and Milla (Johnson) Quammen. She grew up on a rural Boyd farm and was baptized and confirmed at St. Petri Lutheran Church. She attended rural school District 56, attended two years in Montevideo and graduated from Clarkfield High School. She was united in marriage to Russell Quenemoen, son of Alma and Hjalmer Quenemoen, on September 27, 1942. At the end of World War II, Hazel went to New York to meet Russ when he returned from service in the Coast Guard, and they were part of the Victory Ticker Tape Parade on Wall Street. They farmed in Baxter Township, and Hazel worked at different times at Trailways, JC Penney, Control Data, and Northern Telecom. They later also owned and operated the Country Corner convenience store on highway 212 between Montevideo and Dawson. She was a long-time member of Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church of Baxter, active in what was then known as Ladies’ Aid, as well as in circle and choir. She was active as a parent volunteer in 4-H and other community activities. She excelled at baking, cooking, sewing, crocheting, and other hand work. In retirement, she enjoyed playing golf and painting. They wintered in McAllen TX for many years. She is survived by five children: Kathleen Erickson of Savage MN, Richard (Rachel) Quenemoen of Clarkfield MN, Robert (Carol) Quenemoen of Red Wing MN, Lora (Charles) Quenemoen-Running of Dent MN, Julie (Mark) Kallhoff of Canby MN; eleven grandchildren: Lisa (Neal Malmberg) Erickson, Jeff (LeAnn) Erickson, Alma Quenemoen, Mari Quenemoen (Christopher Clark), Bjorn Quenemoen (Stephanie Bauman), Brandy (Larry) Holicky, Jethrol Quenemoen, Kelly Running, Jesse (Kari) Kallhoff, Dustin (Vicky) Kallhoff, Wade Kallhoff (Nicole Evans) as well as granddaughter-in-law Diane (Troy) Quenemoen; three step-grandchildren: Tammy (Rick) Schmitz, Sara George, Danny (Christy) Brusven; fourteen great-grandchildren and twelve step-great-grandchildren, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Russell in 2000; son-in-law Dennis Erickson; grandchildren Troy Quenemoen and Tamara Quenemoen; great grandchild Dalton Kleeberger (son of Tamara); four brothers: Clarence, Orris, Milford and Wendell Quammen; four sisters: Evelyn Anderson, Edna Johnson, Mildred Hanson, and Doris Fenske; and numerous sisters- and brothers-in-law.
